Further to the previous two tips I would like to share a particularly fond memory from a Nile cruise where the seating in the dining room was all tables of 10.

At the welcome meeting after embarkation my wife and I were approched by another couple who asked us if we would mind being on their table as they had spotted that neither of us were smokers.

We duly arrived at our table in the evening where two places had been saved for us opposite the couple concerned. We soon built up a great rappor with all the other guests on our table but became firm friends with the couple who had initially invited us.

To this day, some 10 years later, we are still great friends and visit each other regularly. A real bonus to what was indeed a superbly memorable holiday.

Derek's advice about table sharing is very good as being expected to share a table is common practice on many cruises.

Some ships do have a limited number of tables for two and so another good tip is to get your table booked as quickly as possible after embarkation if you would prefer a "romantic" table.

My partner and I went on our first cruise to the Norwegian Fjords this year. We didn't really realise that we would have to share a table every night in the restaurant. You could share on a table of 4, 6, or 8. We chose 8 because we thought there was more chance of being with somone compatible that way. Which turned out to be true. Two of the other couples on our table were very sociable and really made an effort to converse - which we did. However, the fourth couple said nothing. They weren't actually unpleasant, just dull and silent. Imagine if we'd said we'd be on a table of 4 and it was just them and no one else. It was the same table throughout the cruise so it would have been dreadful every night. A useful tip. Share with as many as possible.

On the last evening of your cruise you will often be asked to place your packed suitcases outside your cabin for collection during the night. You should therefore remember to pack a small bag with toiletries clothing and other necessities for the following day.

Also, if you are not being collected from the ship until later the next day, enquire at the reception if it is possible to keep your cabin beyond check-out time. Often for a small payment this is possible or alternatively another cabin will be allocated to you for the additional time. This makes your final day on board considerably more pleasant.

Many cruise lines offer guaranteed cabins, this just means a cabin of your booked grade or better. These could be on any deck or in any position on the ship.

If you want a particular cabin & position then make sure you book a cabin by number, you will not get any up-grade that is going, but you will normally get the cabin you have booked.

So what is formal?
To be honest this is not really the old fashioned ‘Formal Cruise Night’ where just about all men wore Tuxedos and the Ladies, Evening gowns.
Today formal can be anything from a tux, to suit and tie or sports jacket and slacks; the normal must is just a shirt and tie. This varies between different lines, but if in any doubt just ask your room steward.
The Ladies just about anything that is smart or sparkly, including trouser suits and ball/evening gowns.

Try to arrange you own shore excursions. Do research online ahead of time. It will save you a ton of money and aggravation.

Tim & Sarah Hodge
Arrange ahead for a rental car - much less expensive than the ship's tours and you can go where you want. Plus, you don't get stuck at T-shirt shops where the ship tours always take you!
